Uncle Sonny is the last surviving of Othermama's (Myrtle Carter (Berry)'s children. He currently resides in Houston, TX. He was born April 7, 1933 to Excel Dobbins and Myrtle Carter. We wanted to honor him as we celebrate this reunion and thank him for always remembering and loving his family. He is a very active member at his church in Houston and the below excerpts were taken from a special service honoring him as a Deacon since 1994.
Deacon Robert Dobbins accepted Christ at an early age at the Fifth Street Baptist Church in Kansas City, Kansas. In 1953 he was drafted into the U.S. Army. After a tour of duty in Alaska, he worked in the construction industry as a plumber and steam fitter.
He was discharged from Ft. Hood, TX., where he then moved to Houston, TX. There, he met and married Stella Rose, of Wash, LA. They became proud parents of four children (one is deceased).
He was re-baptized by the late Pastor W.H. Banks at the Jordan Baptist Church in. In 1994 he visited Mt. Vernon Baptist Church where he joined shortly thereafter. Under the guidance of Deacons Isaiah and Cleophus Whitlock, and was ordained as a Deacon in 1994. He loves his Church family as he does his biological family.
He is a 32nd degree Mason and served as Past Master of W.L. Deamon Lodge #297 of the Scottish Rite Grand Lodge AF & AM.
Some of the fondest memories of our Uncle Sonny is that he is a great "teaser". On many occasions he would bring his neices and nephews treats from the bakery he worked at and required that they work for them. I believe he tried to each teach each of us how to play the piano.
Also, you can depend on Uncle Sonny to reach out to his family members with calls and love at any given time.
